I learned that David G. Cantor died at the age of 77. A small article is here. I never met him, but he is well-known due to his paper “Computing in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve” in Mathematics of Computation, 1991 that gives the famous Cantor algorithm for computing in hyperelliptic curves.

I really liked him. I emailed him for a copy of that paper when I was doing my PhD, and it arrived in the mail in an envelope, with a nice letter in beautiful old-fashioned handwriting.
